What Those Furnace Sounds Might Mean

covering-earsThings are certainly warming up out there, but you’re definitely not done with your heating system just yet. No, you may not need to be running your heater around the clock the way you were even just a few weeks ago, but chances are that you’ll need to take the chill out of the air here and there for a bit longer this year. That’s a lot easier to do when your heating system is in great working condition.

All of this is to say that it is not too late in the season to schedule professional furnace repair in Pleasant Hill, IA. We know, we know—you are fairly certain that your heater is going to make it through the season. We’re so close—why worry about it now? Well, because prompt service, regardless of seasonality, is always in your best interest and is best for your systems. If your furnace is making strange sounds, for instance,  it may be a matter of concern.

Is Your Furnace Making a Booming Sound?

When you’re dealing with the combustion of fuel in a natural gas or propane furnace, or even if you use an electric furnace to generate heat, you really don’t want to hear your furnace booming. It’s startling, and it could even mean that there is an unsafe situation developing. Or, it could be a relatively benign occurrence. Working with a professional will help you to understand which you’re dealing with.

It could be that you’re hearing the contraction of ducts. That’s not a major issue. Metal expands when it heats up, and contracts when it cools down. That can result in the booming sound. However, you could also have an issue with delayed ignition, wherein your system allows fuel to build up before combustion kicks in, and that can result in the booming sound and suggests a more serious scenario.

Is Your Furnace Squealing or Hissing?

Your furnace is going to make some noise when it operates, of course. It’s not going to be completely silent. However, it shouldn’t suddenly be making new sounds that it’s never made before. If your furnace starts hissing or squealing, let us know.

It could be that you have a worn out fan belt in your furnace. That’s an easy enough fix for a trained professional, but it can be a real headache if that belt gives out on your entirely when you actually need to be using your furnace. If you hear a hissing sound, don’t worry. Your furnace probably isn’t full of snakes. However, you could have air leaking out of ducts, which is seriously going to affect efficiency.

Is Your Furnace Clanging Around?

If so, that’s a pretty hard warning sign to ignore. And it is not one that you should challenge yourself to ignore!

There are quite a few moving parts in a furnace, and if you have a bent fan blade or if your blower is not mounted down securely, then you may hear some banging and clanging. Play it safe and let us figure out what the issue is.
